What’s your specialty?

There can be only one!

But for now, every Monday-Friday we’re going to start the day with two and work our way from there.

As usual, this is all new territory so you can expect voting to be altered as we go along to maximize.

Last night I found out my Ignite Dallas presentation about this here bracket was accepted. I then said it would be really great to reveal the winner or at least the final matchups in both brackets as my closing slide. I then realized I hadn’t even started the Specialty Bracket. I then realized I hadn’t sorted through the 53 specialty taco suggestions I had in the comments section, on Twitter, on the Facebook fan page and in my e-mail.I am proud to say I was able to narrow the 53 down to 24 after ruling out some specialty tacos that weren’t quite so special (sorry folks, fajita meat is not a specialty in my book).

As with the first round of the traditional bracket, I drew from a hat to decide the first matchups. Sometimes it will be brisket taco v. brisket taco and sometimes it will not. Sometimes it will be Good 2 Go v. Good 2 Go and sometimes it will not. Those are the breaks.

And then there were eight. . .

You guys are amazing – seriously. When this all started, I figured that if I could get some of my friends and maybe a couple random stragglers to vote then this wouldn’t have been all for nothing. In my head, 500 votes would have given this all some sort of legitimacy and it would have been a success.

Almost 4,000 votes later, it’s quite clear I underestimated all of you and the power of the mighty taco.

I wanted to take this post to thank all of you again and to let you know that things are getting more and more interesting in the Traditional Bracket. In the Northeast bracket, it’s down to the three and five seeds. But that’s not all! The matchup a lot of you have been waiting for is happening this week in the Southeast Bracket – Taco Joint vs Urban Taco! That one’s going to be close so vote early and be sure to tell your friends!

But now – let the voting commence!

So what’s so special about this bracket?

I’ve been promising you all a Specialty Bracket update, and I didn’t want to disappoint on such a nice Friday (seriously, is it time for a patio and umbrella drinks yet?). So here we go. . .

Submissions for the Specialty Bracket will end Monday, May 10 at 5 PM. After that point they will be randomly drawn and the first round of Specialty Bracket voting will begin on Tuesday, May 11. Instead of a setup like the traditional bracket, voting will be differently for this one (it IS special, afterall). Depending how many more submissions we get, I will put up two or three head-to-head battles per day. By doing this, we should end up with the Traditional and Specialty Bracket champions being named on the same day (oh, so there was a method to your madness?).

So if you’ve got some specialty tacos you want to submit, send me an e-mail with the name of the restaurant AND the name of the taco (just suggesting Good 2 Go won’t cut it. . .but I think I have their entire menu already).

And don’t forget that voting for the traditional bracket will end Monday at midnight!

And then there were 16 (and a contest!)

A couple upsets happened in the second round of voting – #5 El Ranchito took down Bishop Arts favorite #4 Vera Cruz Cafe in the SW Bracket and #5 Taqueria El Grande beat #4 Aztec Tortillas in the NE Bracket.

After this we’re only one round away from crowning bracket champions and moving on to the Final Four.

Voting for this round will be shorter!

Instead of a full week, voting will end at 12:01 am, Tuesday, May 11. Get your votes in early and spread the word. It’s time to kick this bracket into high gear!

It’s also time to announce the final contest of the 2010 Dallas Taco Bracket: Create the Championship Logo

Do you have crazy art skills? Are you often referred to as a Photoshop Picasso or an Illustrator Inspiration? Do you want to have your work immortalized in the shape of a framed certificate AND get a Taco Survival Kit (more information to come on what this will include) courtesy of Dallas Taco Bracket?

If so, here’s what we’re looking for:

A high quality design that includes ‘Dallas Taco Bracket 2010 Champion’ and reflects not only the deliciousness of the taco but the awesomeness that is our city. Y’all are creative so I’m not going to put any more specifics on it – just be aware that it needs to look good big and small so a lot of detail could count against you.

Put your pens down, taco heads

I’m still shaking off the cob webs from an incredibly fun Cinco de Mayo. What started off as a styrofoam container of tacos from Fuel City quickly devolved into a 32 oz Sol chug contest between me and a couple buddies (note: you can not drink by the pool at Fuel City. . .you’re welcome) and things spiraled down from there.

Now I’m at my desk with a slight headache and still flossing out the last bits of delicious barbacoa. . .but there’s work to be done.

Happy Cinco de Mayo Taco Heads!

We are just about 12 hours away from shutting down voting for round two and it looks like we might need some taco tasters for this Saturday. If you’d still like to be considered, shoot an e-mail over to dallastacobracket@gmail.com and let me know why I should pay for your food (starving student? greedy bachelor? taco freak with no change in the couch cushions?).

The haiku contest will also wrap up tonight. If you haven’t already, submit your best taco haiku in the comments section here and you could walk away with $20 in tacos from a local favorite.

I’m trying to find a friendly place around town to sponsor some taco fun so if you have any suggestions let me know – if you are a friendly place around town, why the hell haven’t we talked yet?
