A winner was crowned: And it was all Good

The lure of the Hotlanta for an entire weekend helped seal the deal for Good 2 Go as they became the Specialty Bracket Dallas Taco Champions last night.

After a slow start out of the gate, a major two-day push by their fans helped fuel the tiny gas station establishment and their waffle batter fried Hotlanta past the brisket tacos at Taco Joint and into the record books as the first ever Dallas specialty taco champion.

My real job has prevented me from having any free time to create the winner’s certificates, but I assure you they’re on their way.

In the mean time, you’re probably wondering what’s next? Well besides creating a new food bracket (burgers anyone?), I’m also going to do my best to keep all you fine Taco Heads informed on new or hidden gems in the area for great eats. I’ve already got a couple places on my radar for this weekend (Pecan Lodge and The Dive) to try out and don’t think I haven’t forgotten about a certain taco crawl (does anything really beat a cold Corona or Pacifico and a taco on a 103 degree day?)

For now, congratulations to Good 2 Go Taco – your support of the bracket didn’t go unnoticed and clearly neither did your tacos.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a championship without a victory song, right? So how about a little 80s and Joe Esposito.

And then there were three

The Traditional Bracket has a champion (Urban Taco) and now we’re down to our final three tacos in the Specialty Bracket. It appears our time together this year is running out so let’s go out with a bang!

The final three left to battle in the specialty bracket are heavy hitters. In two corners of this three-way battle you have superstar tacos from Good 2 Go Taco. The Hotlanta is a Southern treat – waffle battered chicken, sweet potato and honey butter all wrapped in a flour tortilla. The Heck Raiser is a South of the Border taste explosion – house chorizo, sweet potato-spinach hash and cotija cheese in a flour tortilla. It’s rumored that staring at both these tacos together will make you go blind because your eyes are not meant to handle such an awesome sight. Should you eat them both in the same day, it’s also rumored your taste buds will register flavor of such magnitude that anything else you eat will taste like cardboard.

In the final corner, you have Austin transplants and brisket champions – Taco Joint. Sweet and smoky brisket with a good dose of au jus, tomato, avocado and lettuce. When paired with creamy and cool jalapeno ranch, it’s a Tex-Mex concept done so well that border wars cease to exist.

So vote below and tell your friends – the polls for this round will end Friday, June 11 at 12:01 am.

As always, share your love and hate in the comments!

A winner has been crowned!

After over 10,000 votes in just over a month, we have a winner in the traditional bracket!

As I announced last night at IgniteDallas the winner of the traditional bracket was Urban Taco!

It’s been an amazing contest that saw a lot of big upsets early on and a lot of places go further than people expected. I’m completely overwhelmed by the amount of response I got from Day One of creating the taco bracket and can’t wait to do it all over again next year!

For now, Urban Taco, bask in the glory that you are the champions – the top taco – in our fair city.

A very special (fake) interview with Jim Mora

As a special surprise for everyone who’s voted, I am thrilled to do the first ever Dallas Taco Bracket fictional interview! I sat down earlier today with a man who knows all too well the pressures of making it to the postseason.

Ladies and gentlemen, former NFL head coach for the Indianapolis Colts Mr. Jim Mora!

DTB: Thanks for talking with me today, coach. It’s truly an honor.

JM: Thank you – and might I take this time to compliment you on your boyish good looks.

DTB: Oh. . .well thank you I guess. I haven’t had the professional pressure like you have to wear me down, coach.

JM: *evil stare*

DTB: Anywho, what do you think about the matchups heading in to the last round before the finals? Good 2 Go is looking awfully strong representing half the challengers coming in to the semi-finals.

JM: Wait. . .the playoffs?

DTB: Well, yes sir, I suppose you could look at this as the playoffs, but that’s not really the poi-

JM: Well I’m here thinking we’re going to talk about some great places in Dallas to get some tacos and you want to talk playoffs? Playoffs!

DTB: I’m sorry, I could have sworn we cleared all this with your son, but I guess we all know how reliable lil Jimmy can be when he’s at the helm. *Goes up for high five*

JM: Playoffs. Playoffs?

DTB: *Puts hand down, unfived* This isn’t going to go anywhere soon so what do you say we just let everyone start to vote. Why don’t you let everyone know they can vote below and that the three winners will enter the 3-way championship round next Wednesday, June 2.

JM: Playoffs!

DTB: The Colts suck.Vote below!

The four tacos you’ll meet in heaven

I’ve spent the past month trying to be as unbiased as possible. This poll, however, has me at a complete loss. The four tacos in the final matchup for the specialty bracket are seriously some of my favorites around town. While I will always love a traditional pastor taco more than any other, the tacos listed below are by far some of the best in the specialty bracket. In one matchup we have the SoCo vs the brisket taco – sausage vs brisket, complex vs deceptively simple – both amazingly tasty in completely different ways.

The second matchup is brisket vs it’s south of the border cousin carnitas. Two Dallas favorites, Desperados and Victor Tango’s battle it out for specialty taco supremacy. Both bring an extra bit of upscale flare to the street style taco – only one will continue on to the next round.

I’ve been able to predict most of the matchups so far with accurate results, but this round has me stumped. . .no matter how it turns out, I’ll be surprised.

This round will end Thursday at 12:01 am and then only one round of voting will separate us from specialty taco supremacy. Tell your friends and let the tasty tasty voting begin!

Igniting the Finals: Championship Bracket

As some of you know, I’m speaking at IgniteDallas on June 2 (tickets) about Dallas, tacos and this website. At the first IgniteDallas over 400 people watched live and another 200 live streamed the event. . .no pressure, right?

I wanted to do something special in my presentation and an idea struck me last week: Why not shut the polls for the traditional bracket right before I speak?

So, at some point between 7:30 and 10:00pm that night, I’ll close the poll, take the stage and either crown Urban Taco or Taqueria El Si Hay as the best traditional taco in town. I’ll also be announcing the 3 finalists in the specialty bracket – can you feel the excitement?!

If you’re free on Wednesday, June 2 and want to come hang out with some awesome people and here some incredible speakers, come on down. I’ll also be announcing the plans for the future of Dallas Taco Bracket and other big news!

But enough shameless self-promotion. Let’s get down to the good stuff – vote for your Traditional Bracket Champion below!

What’s fuzzy but good, dreamy and blissful?

If you guessed the five seconds between being completely asleep and completely awake, you’d be close.

If you guessed a basket of puppies you would definitely be a little closer.

But if you guessed the next round in the specialty bracket, you’d be right on the money!

It’s local chain vs. anti-chain as Fuzzy’s Tacos fragrant Garlic Shredded Beef and Feta squares off against Good 2 Go’s chili covered, sweet potato packed Chuckwagon. In the second matchup it’s West Coast vs Southwest as Bliss Cafe’s Rawko Taco takes on Dream Cafe’s Austin Tacos. These are all great tacos that I’ve had the pleasure of eating on numerous occasions – once again, glad I don’t have to decide.

Voting will cease Saturday, May 22 at 12:01 am and will resume Monday, May 24 at 12:01 am. Let the games begin!

It’s all good, baby

At this point it should be no surprise to anyone that Good 2 Go Taco is dominating the Specialty Bracket. The incredibly talented and socially conscious women that run Good 2 Go have put plenty of work into making sure that their tacos not only taste great, but promote a better, sustainable lifestyle.

However, it’s time to put an end to the love fest.

Over the next two days it will be Good 2 Go vs. Good 2 Go. No silver lining in this round. . .a Good 2 Go favorite will be knocked out.

As usual, you know the drill – vote early, tell your friends and have fun! If you are angry that I’m putting G2G against each other (even though that’s how the numbers worked out) you can feel free to e-mail me – just be aware that anything you say may be used at Ignite Dallas on June 2 :)

Boo for the shameless self promotion – on to the tacos!

Brisket, Vegans and Dos Equis. . .oh my!

The specialty bracket has seen some great matchups so far. The second round is still a couple more days away, but we’ve seen some great battles in the quest for Dallas’ best specialty taco. From brisket to fried chicken, shrimp to vegan and everything in between, it’s been an incredible chain of matchups. Now there’s only one more round before we move to the second round and less than three weeks before a specialty taco champion is crowned.

As always, vote early and be sure to tell your friends. After all, it’s up to YOU to decide who will be crowned champion.

East Coast v West Coast

A challenge isn’t a challenge without a little rivalry. Tupac vs Biggie, Geno’s vs Pat’s, Roth vs Hagar. . .these are just some of the battles that we’ve faced in recent years. Now it’s time to put Dallas on the map. Soon we’ll see our best in the East face off against the greatest in the West to decide who has the best tacos in our fair city. But before we can, we have to decide who’s the best on each side. We’ve narrowed down the best spots in the the northeast, southeast, northwest and southwest – but that’s not good enough.

After over 5,000 votes, it’s almost time to crown the best traditional tacos in Dallas. This past round of voting has been the highest yet, and the back and forth battle between Urban Taco and Taco Joint was almost too close to call! We are just two rounds away from deciding who’s the best in town.

This round of voting will end Saturday, May 22 at 12:01 am – that means you only have 5 DAYS to decide which side of the city is better, East vs West. So vote early, tell your friends and soon we’ll crown the Dallas Taco Champion!
